Since 2007 the DPD has been transitioning to an electronic-based records system. As a result, officers are spending more time using computers in their patrol car “offices.” While a good use of technology, it has had an unintended outcome. Currently officers wear a Class A leather belt that is very rigid, heavy (about 27 pounds) and hard to work with in their cars. These heavy-duty belts are the main contributing factor to officers’ complaints of discomfort during their work shift. A new “technology” in this area is web gear duty belts that are much lighter, flexible and provide a more comfortable working environment in patrol cars.
